FDM vs Resin

Not sure whether you need FDM or resin 3D printing? Here's a clear guide to the differences, benefits and best use cases, from Tidewater 3D in Grimsby.

What is FDM 3D printing?

  • FDM stands for “Fused Deposition Modelling”
  • FDM filament comes on a large reel, and is one single piece of “string” that feeds into the 3D printer. The printers heats up and melts the filament, and similar to icing a cake, builds up objects in layers.
  • Best For: Strong and functional parts
  • Ideal For: Bracks, Replacement Parts, Prototypes, Low-Cost Products
  • Materials: PLA, PETG, ABS, TPU (see Matrial section below)

Pros:

  • Durable, affordable and fast
  • Easier for large objects
  • Wider material range

Considerations:

  • Layer lines can be slightly visible
  • Less fine detail
  • Surface may need finishing
  • The hotends of FDM 3D printers (where the hot filament is dispersed on the plate), gets very

What is Resin 3D Printing?

  • SLA or MSLA printing
  • Liquid resin in placed into a large vat, and plate is lowered down into it, building up layers slowly. UV light is used to cure the resin.
  • Best For: High-detail and visually sharp prints
  • Ideal for: Miniatures, figurines, cosplay details, display models
  • Materials: Standard, tough, flexible, water-washable resin

Pros:

  • Extremely detailed
  • Smooth finish
  • Perfect for tiny or decorative prints

Considerations:

  • Smaller build volume
  • Brittle if not post-processed properly
  • Requires more clean-up and safety gear

Materials Overview

FDM Filament:

Resin:

  • PLA: Easy, eco-friendly, good all-rounder
  • PETG: Stronger, weather-resistant
  • ABS: Heat-resistant, used in enclosures
  • TPU: Flexible for grips or gaskets
  • Standard: Smooth, detail-rich
  • Tough: stronger, less brittle
  • Flexible: Bendable parts
